Hi, I'm Liz from SimpleDecoratingTips.com, a DIY & decorating blog.

How to remove pet urine?

Well, in the past, I have used vinegar water thinking that was the best way to remove pet urine stains. Though not always happy with the end results, I hadn’t found anything better. However, I recently found a product that claimed to totally clean pet urine stains, odor and stain, but here’s what I found to be the truth!

We have an aging dog… ‘Chester’…

I wish I could totally blame his weak bladder on his age, but he’s always had issues. From what I’ve read it’s his breed. Apparently Norwich Terriers are known to be difficult to house train. Regardless of what the reason is, he has occasional accidents. So if this product’s claim was true, I’m in!!

A recent accident of Chester’s was so frustrating!

Here’s what happened…

If you’ve been following along you know that we bought and have totally renovated our mid-century house. It’s been a long process and to get to the point of finally getting the carpeting installed was a fantastic feeling. There have been months and months of not having anywhere clean to put anything! (Stop by SimpleDecoratingTips.com to read where we're at with all the renovations and to see some 'before and afters'!)

But, we were finally to that point…

Argh!!

I couldn’t believe it! No sooner had I gotten done vacuuming the loose fibers off the carpet from the install and I was running around looking for a bucket, rags and vinegar to try to clean up dog pee as fast as I could.

The carpet in the kid’s (grandkids actually) room is a cute very light gray plaid. Chester’s pee left a dark stain that I couldn’t get off. I blotted. I treated it several times with vinegar water and it still was there. So gross!!!

After several weeks of trying to tell myself it didn’t show all that much, (it actually did and really bothered me) I came across this product and its fantastic claims:

Have you ever heard of it?

I read a lot of reviews saying it was great, but still I never totally believe those reviews, do you? I’m pretty skeptical, so I always read reviews with one eye closed.

Nevertheless, I figured it’d be worth a shot… what’s the worse that could happen? I’d be out a bit of money, and I supposed I could discolor the carpet… Okay, so it could end up being really disastrous!

I took on a ‘you only live once’ approach and hit ‘order now’ before I talked myself out of it. Not only did I order some of the Furry Freshness I also ordered the black-light flashlight that reveals leftover urine… just in case I missed some other puddles from previous accidents that dried long ago.

The black-light was pretty cool. It showed the stain on the new carpeting, (and a few extra drips I didn’t realize were there) in a bright glowing neon yellow! The light works best in a dark room and shows the urine as a glowing stain. It’s actually kind of entertaining to do. (maybe in a ‘can’t look away from roadkill’ kind of entertainment way that is. I’m easily entertained, I live a fairly dull life.) I went around the entire house, both levels and carefully examined every floor, rug and even his dog bed.

I’m happy to report, (as if I need to report to anyone about the amount of dog pee in my house?!) but since it was good, I’ll report. hahaha

The known stain in the kid’s bedroom was the only one that showed up with the special urine finding light!

Now to getting rid of the stain.

I followed the directions and sprayed the entire area with the Furry Freshness. I must admit, I was a little nervous spraying it right in the middle of the room on the new carpet. I had this thought in the back of my head, ‘what if it discolors the carpet??’

I put a fan on it and let it dry, just walking away until the next day. I’d find out tomorrow if the brand new carpet had a huge bleached spot!

So…

Here’s what happened!!

It was totally gone! Yep, I was so pleasantly surprised the following day to find absolutely no trace of the yellow stain on the carpet! There was no sign of where I had sprayed the Furry Freshness and nothing showed up with the urine finding light any longer either. I’m convinced this stuff really is the best way to remove pet urine stains! (and no discolorations on the carpet from the Furry Freshness either.)

If you’re a dog owner, you really need to look into this stuff! I don’t know what’s in it, but it truly eliminates the urine. Oh by the way, I’m super sensitive to scents and perfumes and this does NOT cover up the urine smell with some gross perfume smell. It really eliminates the pee, stain and odor.

Seriously! I know this is really sounding like a commercial, but I really wish I would have found this product many years ago. It is so much better than vinegar water! It really works!

I saw some reviews that say the stain re-appeared after a time. Have your stains come back?

My carpet cleaner told me that on many types and colors of carpet, vinegar actually sets the stain. That’s what it’s often used to set fabric dyes.
