Each year as we move into the winter months, I tend to feel more of the necessity to spend more time on pampering. DIYing a lot of my own toothpaste, deodorant, creams, etc. not only helps shift my family and I towards health, but also saves money in the long run.

Years ago my DIY efforts began to center more around the modalities of Healing according to God’s physical and spiritual directives, becoming stronger and basically changing me and my environment from the inside out. In other words DIY my inner house and the products I use along with the house I live in. When my skin became overly sensitive, I started being aware of the chemicals I chose to ingest, put on my body and use to clean my home. Skin reactions to parabens and the alike pushed me to make my own needed toiletries and to make sure my ingredients were pure. In the process, I’ve found that essential oils work really well to replace that deceptive "fragrance" ingredient listed on most commercial product labels.
The Usual Players
This article will focus on making a basic butter moisturizer, however I won't give specific measurements as the amount you need will depend on you. For example, I usually like to make a large quantity that will last at least one month for two people. So I mix enough for almost a cup. 1/2 cup of butter (like cocoa, shea or mango butter-my preference is Sky Organics unrefined Butter) and 1/4 cup of oil (like olive, avocado or coconut oil). This measurement of 1/4 cup of oil to every 1/2 cup of butter is a good rule of thumb. Some will tell you to keep them both equal, but I find this makes the moisturizer just too oily and doesn't sink into my skin as quickly. Although Kapuluan Raw Organic Coconut Oil is the purest form of coconut oil I have found so far, this can still occur.
Melting Away
You can blend your oil and butter together in one of two ways: 1) Make sure your butter is room temperature or a soft consistency like mango butter and use a beater to blend in the oil. Or 2) If the butter is hard, melt it in a double boiler or use the hot water method in a single small pot (or bathroom sink). I prefer the hot water method because I don't have a double boiler, I don't want to completely liquify my butter and I lose less by measuring and melting the butter directly in the "glass" container my product will remain in. The hot water method is simply heating the water (Not boiling) for about one minute or less and removing it from the stove to the countertop. Depending on the type of counter you have, you will want to make sure you place the hot water pot on something to protect your countertop. I then simply take the "glass" jar containing my butter and place it into the hot water. Make sure the water line only covers about 1/2 to 3/4 of the jar so the water does not spill into the jar. Allow the butter to melt some then add in your oil.  This option is also better if you have other ingredients, like aloe, you wish to include. The brand I most often use is Lakewood Organic PURE Aloe. I tend to include 1-2 Tbsp as this makes the resulting moisturizing butter a bit lighter, fluffier and also contains aloe pockets or beads of moisture. This mixture can then be easily customized to your preferences for scent and experience. Yes, experience! Because scent is a strong sense for most humans triggering memories, warm emotions, etc., using the right pure essential oils can change the way you feel.

Note: All essential oils are NOT created equally or are safe for internal use or are GRAS - Generally Regarded As Safe by the FDA as a food additive. I prefer Young Living essential oils because they are all 100% pure therapeutic essentials with a Seed to Seal quality commitment and their vitality line is GRAS. In my opinion Young Living is the best of the best, pure and they actually work. However, regardless of the company you will want to make sure you follow instructions for how an EO can be used, never put oils in your eyes or ears and if you accidentally get them in your eyes or ears flush with a carrier oil, not water. Adding them to a combination of butter and oil makes using them on your skin even easier. To learn more about the Young Living difference go to www.seedtoseal.com.
It's ALL in there!
To begin your experience choose your eo scent or scents carefully and add a few drops of those essential oils, but go easy! Young Living essential oils and all their products are 100% pure and therapeutic so a little goes a LONG way.  You can build this to the level of scent you prefer, but I suggest you start with 1 or 2 drops per 1/2 cup to make sure the scent is not too strong for you. You also want to choose scents that are both emotionally uplifting and therapeutically healing for you.

There are so many wonderful healing choices to choose from.
• For Skin Repair - Use Frankincense and Lavender
• For Aging Skin - Frankincense, Lemon and Lavender can be used as a night cream. Note: Lemon and all citrus essential oils are photosensitive. So wearing them in the sun could cause your skin to burn. Please remove Lemon from this recipe if you expect to use the moisturizer day and night.
• For Tired muscles, Everyday Aches and Relaxing - use Copaiba and Panaway
• For Stress Relieving - Stress Away
