How To Do Your Own Laundry

1 Hour
Have someone in your life who needs to learn how to do their own laundry? Maybe a college kid? ( hint hint) I've got the basics below to guide them through their first load or two!
First I separate my laundry into 4 piles - whites, delicates, darks and colors.
I put my darks, like black jeans and detailed cloths like embroidered shirts inside out to protect them in the washer.
Before attempting to wash out any stains, be sure to pretreat them. This can be done with your favorite stain stick or spray.
Washing in cold water helps prevent clothing from shrinking. It's known that washing in hot water is better to disinfect, however my washer is very powerful (as apartment washers usually are) and I wash all my clothing in cold.
Before drying every load, I empty the lint trap. This is extremely important. If the lint trap is too full it will take longer for your cloths to dry. Also, if it gets too full it may start a fire.
One last tip is not using fabric softener with your towels. This can prevent the water being absorbed after your shower. So there you have it! The basics of laundry. Now get out there and impress your Mom! :)

I am thinking of buying a stacked laundry unit like yours. do you mind telling what brand yours is, and any issues you may have had with it?

Just don't get GE brand. I have one and hate it. My sheets come out in a twisted ball ( only one sheet in the machine!) the same in the dryer. Worst I have ever used. Get German front loading
    • Donna-Marie Stenlake Donna-Marie Stenlake on Dec 24, 2016
If you get a front loader be sure to dry the rubber gasket and use distilled vinegar in the rinse cycle to keep it clean and not stinky!

Our GE brand is great! Holds more than first one we had but fits in the same space.

I have a Sears Kenmore. The washer is separate from the dryer & you stack the dryer on top of the washer. This way if one burns out you only have to replace the washer or the dryer & not both.
  • Judy Thurston Judy Thurston on Dec 25, 2016
Can you use a Washer if you have a Septic Tank? Because we have Septic Tanks where we live? Is your Washer on wheels or not? Please Respond back ASAP! Thank-You!

Yes, of course you can. I have a full size washer and dryer and the septic grinder pump is in the laundry room. You have nothing to worry about.

I live on a farm and have always had a septic tank as public sewage service is unavailable. No I don't run into town to do my laundry either.

The Duplexes where we live have Septic Tanks and when we moved in we were told that the Septic Tanks could not take anybody that owned a Washer&Dryer so we had to go to the Laundry Mat to wash our clothes? The places where we live was built back in the early to mid 70s, and pieces of junk! Please Respond Back ASAP! Thank-You!

Fabric softener is not good for septic tanks - neither is bleach. Everything else is supposed to be OK.
  • Judy Thurston Judy Thurston on Dec 26, 2016

Do you live close to a reasonably priced laundromat?
    • Robin Bailey-Jones Robin Bailey-Jones on Dec 27, 2016
First check with the owner. It may not be allowed in your contract, second don't get a washer/dryer that's all in one..they're crappy and your clothes will dry indescribably wrinkled!

    • Shawna Bailey Shawna Bailey on Dec 28, 2016
You should check to se if you can get a washing machine and dryer or at least just a washing machine and a drying rack.
  • Judy Thurston Judy Thurston on Dec 27, 2016
How can i try any of these options without a washer&Dryer? I was curious if you thought if i could use one without any hook-ups for them and also if it would be wise with a septic tank we rent? Please Respond back ASAP!
    • Shawna Bailey Shawna Bailey on Dec 28, 2016
Only things you can't use with a septic tank are bleach or fabric softener.

Back in the late 80's I had a washer we kept in the bathroom it connected to the bathroom faucet and drained right into the sink. We would disconnect it when not in use to wash hands and brush teeth etc. The dryer wasn't attached and that we kept in the walk in closet. Look for something like that and try to only use biodegradable laundry detergent.

Why can't you use bleach and fabric softeners with a septic tank? I know tons of people that do...
    • Jan hunter Jan hunter on Apr 05, 2017
Never had any problems with my septic system and bleach and fabric softener
    • LadyOtheLake LadyOtheLake on Aug 12, 2018

Many septic systems have a bacterial biome to further break down excrement. Bleach (chlorine) may kill the biome making degradation more difficult. Same with drain cleaners!

    • Keeton Logan Janice Keeton Logan Janice on Apr 05, 2017

    • Slh17453691 Slh17453691 on Apr 05, 2017
You can get the drying rack at Walmart. Fairly cheap. They come in wood or metal. I use the metal.

I was waiting for the hints. All I got was separate the clothes, use cold water, and empty lint before drying. These all seem like very basic steps.

The sun bleaches everything so if it's not a white or close to it hang it in the shade.
