I bought this Oriental type rug at a flea market and want to be able to clean it myself (non toxic cleaning method preferred) rather than pay for professional. What's a good method for cleaning?

Do you have a steam carpet machine

How big is the rug? I clean small rugs by putting them on my hammock and hosing them. Giving them a suds application by using soap in a Windex applicator. But couldn't do that with a rug that would be too heavy to handle when wet. It looks like a nice rug. It would probably be worth it to have it professionally cleaned or just use it if it smells o.k. and looks o.k. maybe just a good vacuuming?

You didn't say how large the rug is, but if you are wanting to clean it yourself, there are many different designs of both hand-held and wand/vacuum cleaner styles of portable home-size carpet steam cleaners. Here are two brands.

I set up pallets in my driveway, put the rug on top and then washed it down with a hose. Then it dries in the sun.

Is it made of wool or a polyester fabric. Wool cannot take steam or warm water.

Years ago when we bough a Persian rug in the NY rug wholesale district--where the rug dealers knew their rugs--they said to mix Joy dish soap with warm water and use a soft bristle brush in circular motion. Rinse with warm water and that's all you have to do.

My neighbor in Louisville use to take hers outside and put in on the ground and use the pressure washer on hers. She said that is what the pro's do. I just use my carpet cleaner once a year.

I have a rug shampooer, not a steam cleaner. I use a vinegar and water mixture (about 50/50) and a very small amount of dish soap. you can also just scrub by hand with a scrub brush in a circular motion. Then I let dry. I have used this method on many oriental and oriental style rugs and never had a problem.

I went to Iran once, a long time ago but cant forget how they kleen the rugs... they whash them with water and dish soap and rinse with a pump! Personally I spread soda powder let it overnight and vaccum in the morning. My mother uses amoniac in warm water with a rough sponge and hers are also beautiful! Gooo luck
