I put one of those rubber mats (shelf liner from Dollar Tree) under my rug and it stops the rug from sliding and protects the floor.

If you are going to clean a rug with a steam cleaner--I would not do it on a hardwood floor. I would take it outside on a deck or place the rug on a vinyl floor to clean it. The steam and moisture from the damp rug sitting on a hardwood floor could damage the floor.

Had this problem with no area big enough to move the rug to. I went to Lowe's and bought a roll of the thickest plastic. I placed this between the rug and the padding. (it didn't need cleaning) rented a steam cleaner and had my husband stand on the edge so the suction would not move the rug. Keep the plastic in place until rug was dry. I did place the rug up on plastic laundry baskets to help with drying. (one end at a time)

I'd put a solid leak-proof sheet of plastic under the rug before shampooing it, that way no moisture will ruin the hardwood floors, & I'd leave the plastic down until the rug is 100% dry.
