white cleaning vinegar (10% acetic acid) and baking soda.
Spray on vinegar, sprinkle baking soda, watch it fizz.
Let dry and should be gone when you vacuum.
Repeat if necessary. Works well for stains caused by my dog, now use this method for everything.
I add a bit of bleach to my carpet cleaning water
1 c. hydrogen peroxide and 2 T. of blue dawn dish soap. Put in a spray bottle and stir. Spray on stain and let set for 20 or more minutes. You can scrub lightly or just blot up. Repeat if some stain remains. You can double...triple, etc. depending on size of stains. Also, this is not harmful to people or pets.
To be safe I'd have the carpet steam cleaned.
