How do you get diesel fuel out of a coat?

My husband had a mishap with diesel fuel and his coat is soaked with it as if you poured it on the coat. I don't mean a little spot either. The coat is a good one so don't really want to throw away.

    Hi Mitzi,

If his coat is washable, you should be able to clean it with specific types of prewash and laundry detergent. Below is a link to an article that explains a lot. I hope it helps you.

If it is washable, run it through a couple loads of wash. I wouldn't wash it with anything else though. And I would let it dry naturally unless the directions say you can put it in the dryer. If the directions say dry clean, I would take it to a cleaners.

There is a product called Lestoil I used it on all my husband's clothing, Kroger used to carry it.

I would not put it into any automatic washer. You are taking the risk of having your washer smell like diesel, and transferring the smell onto subsequent loads of laundry.

How much did you pay for the coat? and how old is it? If you feel it is worth the expense and time to try to save it, then take it to a professional cleaners.

I have had that problem before. I added 1 cup listerine to washer with blue jeans and smell was gone. Original listerine.

Many mouth washes now do not contain any alcohol, the way the original mouthwashes did. Maybe the alcohol neutralized the diesel?
