Have you tried Oops ? It's a citrus oil based product that is really good for that sort of thing . WD-40 is also but I don't think I would put it on the carpet . Spot check the Oops in an inconspicuous spot first. I am pretty sure that will do the trick . You can find it at Walmart .
One thing to try mineral spirits or nail polish remover but you only want to dab a little at a time and be careful breathing the fumes. Another way is using an iron, lay the paper over a spot , then a towel a with circular motions move the iron over the paper to heat and lightly melt the glue.

It mentions Goo-gone spray & I haven't ever used it on my carpets but I can say it works amazing to get rid of sticky residue on anything I've ever tried it on.
OOPS is for removing paint mishaps. Try using Goo Gone. Pour some on the stain, let it sit for a while, then blot with a clean cloth. Try in an inconspicuous area first. Goo Gone softens adhesives. Works great removing labels.
Krud cutter also might work,but test in a small spot first.
