You could try vinegar or Nature's Miracle. But I have had the same issue and had to throw the rug out. Good luck.

Hello! My mother-in-law made her own wool blankets and rugs on a loom back in Greece. She said never to wash or dry them in a machine. She always had us soak them in cold water in the bathtub. I would first sprinkle baking soda on the pet stain and then dab with vinegar. Afterwards place in the tub with cold water and swish around to remove dirt and any baking soda/vinegar residue. Gently squeeze out excess water — if rug is really large, you may need some help to do this. Hang over shower rod to dry, placing a couple of old towels on floor to catch any drips. If no rof, lay out flat to dry in an area where 1) there is enough room, and 2) pets cannot access, and 3) area below the damp rug will not be affected. This all takes some effort, but then that is why the cleaners wants $100. Good luck!

I've gently washed wool rugs this size in the bathtub with woolite and drip dried on a laundry rack after gentle water rinsing.

I used to have regular sales at my house and everything I sold was clean and very well presented. Any rugs would have been washed. I did this by placing the rug (small sized) on a hammock and rinsing it first with water (cold) and then using a product like Woolite and brushing it on after which I would rinse the rug again. I would leave them to dry on the hammock, turning as necessary.

I meant to say I would use a hose to do this rinsing.
