saddle soap is generally what's used on leather for cleaning. its mild and wont dry out the leather as badly as other soaps.

Take to a specialty leather cleaner - expensive, yes, but you have a chance of saving the piece.

Some leather is just too stained to clean. I would go to a farm supply store as they have the best choice of leather cleaner available. Saddle soap works, but I've found other products work better. When you clean leather, it may darken after being cleaned. If this is a jacket, I'd take it to a professional leather cleaners.
