Try half a cap full of household ammonia in with your liquid carpet cleaner and water.Open all your windows before doing this as your carpet will smell to high heaven due to the ammonia!..The smell will dissipate after a few hours but will leave your carpets smelling clean and bring up the colour. When we had dogs I did this quite regularly on my carpets and the carpets lasted me years!..Hope this helps

Clorox makes a Urine Remover spray. Don't use ammonia that encourages them to wet again because there is ammonia in urine!

The ammonia smell DISAPPEARS..along with the smell of urine...My dogs NEVER urinated in the same spot again

Use kitty litter. When my husbands catheter sprung a leak on the living room carpet I covered it with the kitty litter for 24 hours and then removed it. Odor all gone!

Vinegar! Put white vinegar in a spray bottle and spray it on the site. Rub it in then put a dry cloth on the spot and put pressure on it to get all the liquid left there.

If we're talking pet urine, use Natur'es Miracle or any other cleaner with enzymes--that's the key. And, the solution must penetrate all layers of carpet, pad and subfloor (or concrete) to totally elminiate smell. Else, when re-wet or humid, odor will be apparent however faint. Also, never use ammonia to clean pet urine. Ammonia is present in urine and pets will be attracted to that area (vet told me that). Vinegar is a good home remedy, too, just not as good as an enzymatic cleaner. Soak area well, remove excess after it's set for a while, and rinse with water. Vinegar can discolor carpet - test first. I have kitties...I've been there, done that and Nature's Miracle is my #1 go-to product (works every time and no rinsing).

Peroxide. It breaks down the enzymes in urine and the bubbles helps lift it up so it can be wiped/washed away. But like someone else posted, you have to get the carpet, padding and subfloor for it to work. Poor peroxide, cover with plastic overnight then the next day vacuum/shampoo using a little water as possible. (I pore a little more peroxide then use my shampooer to suck it out.) Be sure to test the carpet in a hidden area in case it affects the color of the carpet.

It depends on the carpet. My daughter used this method for several years and it didn't bleach her carpet. (She had a senior cat that had accidents - from old age, not fixable health issues).

You could try baking soda. When my daughter vomited all over my new carpet on New Year's Eve, the carpet cleaning fellow told me to use baking soda in my machine-worked wonders and I have used it since whether I have odors or not. There is also a product called Urine Off which works well-you would have to spray it over the carpet, then steam clean

We bought a house with carpet that was basically used as a potty for the previous owners dogs. It was actually wool and very high end. So we had it taken out and factory cleaned. Replaced all the padding. Not sure who would do this now but it might be cheaper to replace. Sorry, that smell may go away but for some reason it does come back. And if you have any pets, they can smell things that you can't and before you know it there's an oops on the carpet.

For a sure fix.....remove the carpet.....and if you have a pet it will start to tinkle where the previous pet went...marking their spot...it is a costly under taking even the floor under the carpet could be ruined..this happened when we bought our second house....Good Luck...

Rip the carpet out of the house. There is no such thing as a clean carpet.

Ted is right. My Husband is a flooring contractor. Pulls up lots of carpet with stains all the way through the sub flooring. Urine is the worst.

I can tell you we got a puppy that during traing went in several spots on the carpet. I tried baking soda and vinegar and it worked for a while then the smell would creep back. Finally I read that a mix of Listerine and water 50/50 would work. I sprayed it well and used the carpet cleaner to suck up the excess that was almost 2 yeas ago and the smell has never come back.

take it out! Nothing will get rid of the smell. It stays forever! Go with tile with no grout lines or true hardwood that is sealed. Sorry, not the answer you are looking for.

Baking soda, peroxide and oxy-clean will almost destroy the odor as long as your carpet is color safe! Yes, it's terrible, I agree!
