There are places you can take them to that will clean them. Because I have seen rugs hanging at a place that cleans carpets I assume they put them in some sort of liquid cleaner, or get them quite wet when cleaning them before hanging them to dry.
Vacuume all the dirt out or beat it while hanging on a rail.
Spot clean stains
Allow to sit in the Sun on rail for a day
Flip over and soak in Sun another day.
Wool is anti microbial

I have mine professionally cleaned. The people at Rugknots would be cringing . . . I have a house full of pets, but my wool rugs are ancient and were well loved before I acquired them an not "museum" quality. We live in our house, not a tippy toe around the pricey antiques and rugs . . .
If you can't steam clean them, you might consider professional cleaning.
