Vivian Hello,. Wash the stairs with Murphy's Oil Soap, which is just for wood. Buy a stain darker than the preset wood, and the stains should not be noticeable. Aloha!
Stained or painted finish?
Carpet?
If they are carpeted, I'd rent a commercial carpet cleaner (I know my local grocery store Wegmans has them for rent) and it did wonders to remove stains from my carpets when I first moved into my home. We have since puchased our own steam carpet cleaner for our basement rug and it gets just about anything out!
