How do I thoroughly clean the cement floor after I rip out the carpet?

My carpet has to go! Its been thru 5 dogs and 2 litters of puppies with 10 pups in each. I cannot afford to put in new flooring. I want to make sure i get all the smells gone first. Any ideas? And any ideas of what to do to the floors afterwards to make my living/dining room more appealing?

We also have the same issue, with 5 cats and 1 who 'sprays' whever he gets picked on by the other cats.

We have been researching, polished concrete floors. You can pull the carpet and padding [cutting it in 2 foot wide strips and roll and tape it so the garbage truck 'should' pick it up, if you offer a kind tip, like a $10 or $20 if you have alot of carpet].

You may mop the floor with 'Angry Orange' [Amazon] as it is used for commercial pet kennels. I would get concrete 'patch' to fill in the holes from the tack strips along the baseboards. After it dries, you may get some spray on concrete stain.........and do small circles, as you need to keep wetting with a tank sprayer, and you mop on amonia or baking soda, to STOP the staining. I would then get some wax, maybe car wax, and polish in the wax to seal the floors...........This will take alot of time but will be beautiful.

We got a $5,000 bid for a concrete flooring company to come and do all these steps, so you decide if you are up to the task......Good Luck!!!!

Hi Shari, here's some help for getting the concrete clean. Also, you might possibly look into a 2-part epoxy made by Rustoleum called "Rock Solid". When applied, it will make the area look clean and with a shiny finish. It comes if a few colors, like grey/silver, red, etc. You can find it at any of the big stores like Lowes, or Home Depot. May not be the look you want, but it is very durable and easy to maintain.

well....first I beg you to spay-neuter your pets............... Do you know what is under your carpet? cement slab, wood, tile???? remove carpet completely along with all tacking strips and screw/nail heads (use a hand/held grinder) then vacuum up all loose debris then clean thoroughly let dry then use some enzyme odor killer. Not all enzyme cleaners are equally effective. Good enzyme cleaners are typically a bit more expensive. Cheap ones(natures miracle) will work, but need to be reapplied over and over (and probably end up costing as much as the more expensive enzyme cleaners). Enzyme cleaners this author is aware of that work well and reliably include Nok Out, Urine Off, Stinkers and Anti-Icky Poo. Or check with local/in your arera janitorail suppliers for live enzymes odor cleaners.

Of course any cleaner needs to be used properly. Most enzyme cleaners come in a spray bottle. This is deceptive, because just spraying a light layer of enzyme cleaner over a urine stain will not result in complete cleaning of that spot. Cat/dog pee wicks(spreads seeping outward), and unless the enzyme cleaner completely envelopes all of the cat/dog pee, even it won’t work. “Spraying” doesn’t work. Dousing, pouring, and soaking are required when cleaning up cat urine.

To properly use an enzyme cleaner on a fresh stain:

    1. Blot up as much of the urine as you can before applying anything.

    2. Soak the affected area with the enzyme cleaner.

    3. Let the enzyme cleaner sit for 10 to 15 minutes.

    4. Blot up as much of the enzyme cleaner as possible.

    5. Leave the enzyme cleaner to air dry.

Then prime with appropriate primer, cover it with 2 coats; Kilz high bonding adhesion interior/exterior primer works best if you do not want to do prep work on surface first. you can either paint over the primer or leave it & have some white flooring easy to keep clean.

To clean get a wet/dry vac and a garden sprayer. Invest in some pet enzyme cleaner to remove pet odors like cat spray and urine. I use the tablets from Frizzon or Jackson Galaxy Pet Stain & Odor Remover on Amazon - the tablets since theire mixed fresh are much more effective. Put in the garden sprayer in warm water, spray down the floors, and wipe the walls too if cat spray. Then use a garden brush on the floor, and suck up the mess in the wet/dry vac.

Then prep the floor by filling any cracks or nail holes with cement patch.

Then you can decide if you like an epoxy finished floor or an acid stained floor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tA5Kcwyx0o
