How do I remove adhesive on linoleum?

The previous owner of our house glued a mat to the floor in front of the kitchen sink. We'd like to remove the mat from the floor and the glue is taking up the floor if we just try to peel off the mat. What can we use to remove it that won't hurt the floor?

Try saturating the mat with Goo Gone or WD40. Give each time to soften the glue.

Have you tried warming it in small sections? It may loosen it enough to be able to get it off without damaging the linoleum. I would cut away the rug as you loosen up the rug so that it doesn't allow the adhesive to dry on the floor again. I guess it all depends on the glue that was used to put the rug down.
