How to clean a smelly synthetic shag pile rug?

I have a synthetic shag pile rug that is now a bit discoloured and smelly. Apart from regular vacuuming, I have tried dousing it with baking soda and then vacuuming, have also sprinkled the Shake'n vac lavender scented carpet powder over it then vacuuming. Any ideas would be appreciated but methinks just taking it to the dump might be the best idea.

Take it to the car wash and pressure wash it. It's the best way to clean rugs. This is probably a spring or summer project though :)

Sounds like it's time to replace the shag. Check your local Habitat Resale Store for flooring options. You can always paint your floor until your budget allows an upgrade. Best of luck.

Unfortunately, sometimes synthetic fibers or backing on area rugs will begin to yellow and even cause off-gassing with age. If you have put and powdered carpet freshener on it, make sure you vacuum or shake all of that out of the carpet. I found out the hard way that powered will turn to a concrete type texture when wet. Cari had a good suggestion to power wash it at a car wash. If none of that works, your idea of the bin might be the easiest. You have to decide if the work and cost is worth keeping it, or replacing it. Good luck!

Get rid of the dirt and dust collector, and replace with laminate or if the budget allows, actual hardwood.
