How to stop a dog from urinating?

We just moved into our new home. We have a male dog (Chihuahua-Terrier) mix, and I can't stop him from urinating inside our home. I have tried Vinegar, baking soda-mixed w/vinegar, and plain soap and water to clean. They say this should clear the smell, and stop them from urinating in the house. Guess what, it doesn't! Does anyone have any suggestions, as to what to use? I don't want to get rid of the dog, he belongs to my daughter who left to college (I'm close to giving him away). Their is a doggie door to come and go, but is only doing this @ night. Please help! Feeling desperate. Thanks

  • Hi Cat ,that's a tough one. We used to use Nature's Miracle since it had enzymes in it to completely eliminate the odor. It did discourage our pup from going in that spot again. The vet may offer other suggestions. Good luck.

Thank you, so very much! I'll be trying some of these tips, for sure.

  • I would suggest limiting water and renting a steam cleaner. You may need industrial help to remove the odor. This will hopefully help the dog not feel the urge to mark that area. Good luck!

  • Have you tried bitter apple spray? Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It is a spray to deter them from any area. Another option is to take him out before bedtime. Has he ever been crated? You might try that too. I had never crated until I have my current group as if I needed to travel, they needed a safe place and to sleep when in someone else's home where they may not have the run of the house. All the cats and dogs sleep with me. Part may be that he is marking his territory. My latest acquisition, a neutered male, still does this. The bitter apple has worked to a certain extent. If you have to give him away, only give to a qualified rescue group or a no kill shelter.

I've dealt with some really nasty, smelly stuff in the past (I won't go into it but trust me, it was bad bad bad!)

Anyway there's this stuff called, "Neutra-Clean" by a company called, "Griffin" its is amazing stuff for odors and it doesn't leave a chemical odor behind. I purchased it at a commercial cleaning company years ago when I lived in Hawaii so I'm not sure what the deal is with it now but I'd be shocked if it wasn't being sold anymore (I'll be Googling it when Im done here!).

    Good luck!

Please don't get rid of the dog. Have you had it to the vet to see if it it has an infection or needs medication. We leave our dog door open all the time. Good luck and I hope you keep your pooch.
