Penny...We use Blue Magic for spots from Auto Zone then just a good shampoo and it works great.
Well I don't use shampoo. I have mine steamed using vinegar as a natural disinfectant. Carpets should be cleaned once a year for maximum wear and durability. I have done more often as I have a house full of pets. Here are some other methods you might try.

I have used Bissell for many years and have been satisfied with the result. Do not over saturate your carpet and it will dry much faster. Also do not do the cleaning on a humid day or it will take a longer time to dry out. I have a Hoover Carpet cleaner and love it as it removes most of the water.
You should never use soap. You can never get all the soap back out once you put it in your carpet. That sticky residue just attract more dirt. I found the vinegar, club soda all work real good and leaves no residue
