Maintain Your Mattress

Why Do This?
One-third of your life is spent asleep, so make sure the place you sleep is clean and bacteria-free. You may not want to think about it, but dust mites and bacteria tend to lurk beneath your sheets by the thousands. By taking a few minutes to properly maintain your mattress, you’ll reduce allergens and bacteria and extend the life of your mattress.
How To:

1.) Once a week, wash your sheets in hot water and then tumble dry. If you regularly hit the hay without showering, you might want to consider washing (or changing) your sheets twice a week.

2.) If you’re allergy prone, sleep can be anything but peaceful. Dust, dander and dust mites build up in your mattress if it’s unprotected. Cover your mattress with a plastic or cotton mattress cover to delay the growth of allergens and keep your mattress clean.

3.) Every six months, flip your mattress over so the top is now the bottom, and turn it so the foot of the mattress becomes the head. Grab a friend, because this is a two-person job. Flipping your mattress prolongs its life by distributing the wear.

4.) Twice a year, strip and vacuum your mattress. Fight the urge to spray it down with a cleaning solution because moisture on your mattress will promote the growth of mold and mildew. Always try to keep your mattress as dry as possible.

5.) Clean stains from your mattress as quickly as possible. Spilled drinks, urine and blood can leak through your sheets and stain your mattress. If the stain is fresh, blot the area to remove as much moisture as possible. Then, use a spray bottle and apply hydrogen peroxide to the area and allow it to sit for about five minutes. Blot the spot dry, then sprinkle baking soda over the area, and allow it to sit for several hours. To clean, simply brush the baking soda off. If the stain persists, repeat the process.

6.) Mattresses last for about ten years. Beyond that, they stop offering the support you need for a good night’s sleep. If your mattress is over a decade old, it's time to purchase a new one.
