Hi Maggie. Wood putty is used to fill in holes in the wood. This is usually done and then it is sanded down so it blends in. Then the wood is stained or painted. Someone might have done this after the wood was stained. You can try mineral spirits but it might take off some of the finished. I wish you luck!
A light sanding with fine grit sandpaper
I agree. A light sanding with fine grit sandpaper will work. Another option is to use a green kitchen scubby. Coarse enough to remove the wood putty but not affect the finish much.
I would just stain over them with Old English furniture polish. It is good for the wood and comes in light or dark. For maple and light oak choose the light, for Cherry wood etc use the dark. It is hard to tell from a photo, but yours looks light.
