TSP often used, Angela.
You can use a fine steel wool pad, going in one direction along with baking soda, dish liquid and warm water to remove the gunk before painting. Be sure to rinse thoroughly.
Angela, I use a degreaser named Simple Green. I used it in my restaurant kitchen (I no longer have the restaurant). That is a wonderful product. I even clean my sinks with it now, and naturally, stove and cabinets. The dirt and grease just seem to melt off in front of your eyes. Just rinse well after use. 😘
