How do I remove heavy grease accumulation from my maple cupboards

My kitchen canibets are light maple, and the ones above the stove are grimy. I tried to clean them as I do the others, but the grease will not come off. I don't want to strip the finish but want to remove the grease . What can I use?

Hi Kara, wanted to know what you are using to clean your cabinets. There are SO many recipes for cleaning products here at Hometalk, I'm sure there is one for you...just need to know if you're using the best thing now for your beautiful cabinets. 😊

I use Dollar Tree Awesome Degreaser on all my clients cabinets, and I get the car sponge and those round plastic kitchen scrubbies. Don't use TSP, it can take the finish right off the cabinet.

I have not tried this, but I know of others who have used Meguiar's Hot Rim all Wheel cleaner. You can get a bottle for about $5 at an Auto Parts store. Just spray it on a small section of the cabinet and let it work. Then wipe it off. Re-apply if needed. A friend had a rental that he had to clean cabinets and they were deep in scum. This was the only thing that would get them clean. It does not hurt the cabinets but you may want to use gloves (for the dirt if nothing else). Hope this helps you.

Try full strength Dawn liquid; it cuts grease well. Apply, let set for 30 min., wipe off. See if that works.

  • Murphy's Oil Soap is what I use.

This is a tough one as a lot of things that may take the grease off may also damage the finish.

First try 2 tablespoons of blue Dawn dish soap and a couple of cups of warm water. Scrub with this solutions rinse with clean sponge and dry with clean towel.

If that doesn't do it try baking soda on a damp cloth. rinse and dry.

if that still doesn't work, add 1 cup of vinegar to the Dawn and water solution so you have 2 cups of water, 1 cup white vinegar and 2 tablespoons of blue Dawn.

if the grease is still not coming off, add 1/2 cup borax ( you can find this in the laundry aisle in your grocery) to the Dawn, water, and vinegar solution.

You can condition the cabinets with liquid furniture polish and 0000 steel wool. Be very careful and apply with the grain of the wood and buff with a clean, dry cloth.
