How do I remove oil marks from oak veneer table?
Hi there, I recently purchased an oak table with a white washed veneer top. I've been super careful, using mats at every meal and wiping down quickly, BUT I already have several marks across it. Some around the edges - which I can only presume is from my kids' little hands, and some in the centre which must be food related. But I think they are oil rather than water based stains.
But it seems crazy that it should mark so quickly and easily.
So 2 questions, how can I remove or cover over the stains, and then treat it with something that stops it collecting more stains so easily?
All thoughts gratefully received!

Here are a few ways. If the table top was not sealed with a clear coat forget the paste wax and seal it with three coats of a water based polyurethane.

Lightly Sand the table down. Clean with TSP. Let dry completely then either stain or white wash again. Then Seal the top it is the only way to prevent stains.
here is how to clean the oil marks but I would add a table cloth you can even find fitted round table cloths (Amazon) then you won't have to worry about marks on the table

I would sand it and stain it the color you want. Seal it with polyurethane for a tough finish.
Thank you so much. This is a really helpful article. I get the feeling the top wasn't sealed, so will go for the polyurethane. Should I white wash it again before sealing it?
Here are several ideas for removing the stains and also a tip for how to prevent it from happening again by using wax. https://homeguides.sfgate.com/clean-oily-residue-wood-furniture-97881.html
Hi Clare, Start by wiping them with a rag dampened with white vinegar. If that has no effect, pour an ounce of baking soda into a bowl and, using hydrogen peroxide from your medicine cabinet, make a paste. Cover each spot with the paste, and rub it in with a cloth. Then let it sit until it dries out.
