How do you get the smell out of old furniture?
Bought an old desk and painted it but the smell of the "old wood" did not clear fully from either cleaner or vinegar. Do you have any ideas ?

charcoal. set a dish or bag of it in the corner of your desk & let it set fro a few weeks o however long. It will do the trick. also try an open box of baking soda, & sprinkle some in the drawers, let set a few days. clean out & let air out. It worked for me & my china hutch.
I always start with Murphy's Oil Soap, Liz, but here's a link with a few more ideas:

apply 2-3 coats of shellac inside and out, then repaint. if repainting is not an option, maybe just the areas not painted
Try a few charcoal briquettes in a bowl in the drawers and on top (leave for a few days to a week). See if it makes a difference. It worked in our van when we hauled mulch that really smelled bad!
