I don't know how to remove them, but when I built my daughter a chest, 4'x2'x2' out of mahogany many years ago, I put on quite a few layers of sealer and stain, sanding between coats and she has put hot things on it and cold things and wet things and even dripped candle wax all over it. Never did it ever leave any kind of marks or stains and is still beautiful 23 years later, even after moving at least 15 times. So, think about lightly sanding the top and brushing on sanding sealer, maybe several coats, and lightly sanding after every coat. Just my experience.
