I've got an ornate metal headboard that survived a fire.

How do I clean it? I've heard of TSP. How is it used and where do I go from there?

You dilute the powder to make a paste, rub it on then rinse off. TSP is very toxic so wear long sleeves, gloves, pants, use a mask in a well ventilated area. Don't let it go down the sewer system. You may want to check to see what the regulations are in your area. You may have a TSP substitue which is very safe to use. Just check your lable to see which one you have.

Before resorting to chemicals, try a high powered pressure washer. If you or a neighbor don't own one, take the headboard to the closest car wash and invest several quarters.

Take it to a place that sand blasts and after have it powder coated. It should be beautiful in new color.

Years ago I used Naval Jelly, I think that is the right name, on an old rusted trunk. (Not a real expensive one) It was a thick, clear gel type consistency that bubbled the old paint up & it then scraped off pretty easily. Outside ventilation needed definitely. Those were the days of 'antiquing furniture, and I worked so hard on it I have kept the deep yellow gold color. I refinished the wood trim, painted the corner & trim black & amazingly it has blended with all of our changing decor. Of course I have recovery the inside trunk top & the tray at least 3 times!

TriSodium Phosphate... Aka TSP',works well on cleaning wood ,don't know about metal, but, why not.
