Hello. I always favored using the rug doctor carpet cleaner upholstery tool wand. It’s amazing what that steam machine can pull out of carpet and furniture.
It depends on what’s made it dirty.
Vacuum it first
Food based stains can have cooking oil residue, which needs a soap.
Or something like red wine or mustard will need an Oxyclean or peroxide treatment.
I would not use heat/steam as my first choice, as some stains are set by heat.
Vacuum first. Then it will depend on what issues you have on how to proceed with cleaning and the upholstery material. Spot cleaning is normally best but you will need to make sure you don't leave spots. I have had great results on light furniture with Campanelli carpet cleaner. It's a point & shoot cleaner.

for leather
Mix a solution of warm water, a few drops of Castile or liquid dish soap and a few drops of vinegar. Dampen a cloth with the solution and wipe down surfaces. Do not saturate the leather, as too much water will damage it. Use a second cloth dampened with clean water to wipe off the soap.
