Use a stiff brush and clean as much as possible. If that doesn't take it off, you can sandblast.

You're going to need a heavy duty wire brush and alot of good old fashioned elbow grease! Once the rust is removed you can simply spray paint the wrought iron using any of the brands recommended for EXTERIOR use. Your hard work will be rewarded with you now having a gorgeous outdoor seating set for years to come!

P.S. My wrought iron set is too huge to store in the shed so it's left outside all year long. Every couple of years I refresh it with a quick spray painting & it continues to stay rust free and looking good even after having it for 30+ years!

If you can disassemble the pieces , maybe soak them in Coca cola (like overnight) and use a wire brush. There are products available to coat the rust where you can't get to it, and "seal" it into a paintable surface. I received some iron grate cleaner (Sears) with my new range - wonder if that would work in your situation? Requires soaking tho.

I can't personally recommend this, but a Hawaiian friend told me that they use something called "naval jelly" to deal with rust in their humid climate. I have a badly rusted bench as well, I may need to head to the hardware store myself!
