Just renting, can't replace the multi-painted kitchen cabinets. They smell like old paint, mold, mildew and grease.

As nasty as it is TSP is THE solution when painted surfaces are like this. It helps prevent any further mold too. Please wear long rubber gloves as it can eat holes in your skin if you are reactive...much like bleach, but I have never found a friendlier cleaning solution to solve this if anyone does happen to know a nicer alternative.

I know a landlord who says putting open containers of coffee is effective for this.

  • Wash them! Murphy's Oil Soap. Take everything out of the cabinets and wipe those down too. Set bowls of charcoal in there too for a few days.

    What is TSP?

Do not use tsp, wash the insides and outsides down with white vinegar and water and a dab of blue dawn dish soap. The vinegar will aide in the mildew ,the soap will aide in the rest of the residue, place open boxes of de-activated charchol, baking soda, coffee grounds, any of them will absorb the odor
