Return to white finish!

SindyBaron
by SindyBaron
A 'friend' sat at my dining room table and used a blue sharpie on his papers. It went thru to the table. I don't want to do anything to radical for fear of stripping. Any suggestions?

I'd try using a magic eraser and see if that will remove it without disturbing the finish.

What is the finish made of? Rubbing alcohol removes Sharpie ink even on washable paint (test first though so you don't ruin the finish).

I agree with the "magic eraser" approach. Those are gems!

Try hairspray. It worked on my upholstered chair so it might work on something solid. It's worth a try.

Hairspray has acetone in it and will "melt" or dissolve plastics and latex.

I had a friend spill a glass of water on my table and didn't tell me. After several days, the wood needed to be refinished. I didn't have the time or energy for that. I bought a piece of glass the size of the table, bought fabric to put under the glass; the same size as the glass and table top, and now have a permanent table cloth on my table, glass that can easily be wiped up, and I can change the fabric with the season.

Problem is my table has drop down leaves which I use as needed. Thank you so much tho!

My daughter did this on my table years ago. I cleaned with every type of cleaner that I knew wouldn't harm the finish (fantastic, glass plus, etc.) Most of it came off and what was left eventually wore off.

I use a fleece lined protector on my table all the time under a tablecloth. This protects against accidents, hot coffee cup, etc.

Mr Clean Magic Eraser will remove permanent marker and shouldn't effect the finish. We work on fitness equipment and I use the Magic Marker on the painted finishes without any scratching to the surface. These things are amazing! I would test on an inconspicuose area on the under side, but I would be absolutely shocked if it caused a problem. Also, I never use a whole sponge. I always cut them in thirds or even quarters. They have become my go to with crazy stain issues. I haven't been disappointed yet. Good luck!

@Ginny Cooper Brown Thank you so much for the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser tip! I actually have them and use them on just about everything - except the table my 6 yr old neighbor colored with magic markers he used on paper. Just went and got the Eraser and WOW! purrfect job and way easier than I expected! The finish wasn't damaged at all. Thanks Again! :D

Sometimes hair spray works on sharpies. Goo gone works on lot of things.
  • SindyBaron SindyBaron on Aug 16, 2015
Wow! Never heard about the hairspray! Thanx so much!

Goo gone can ruin a finish. Try MINERAL SPIRITS. You can also try KRUD CUTTER. (Both available at home improvement/ local Hardware stores) I used mineral spirits to remove duct tape glue from my neighbor's car. Had to rub quite a bit, but absolutely zero finish issues. Paint axtually looks better than washing! ( wear blue gloves) Krud Cutter works on almost every suface, but, tends to leave a slight residue, easily cleaned off w/ a 'glass cleaner' product and a clean lint free cloth. good luck, let me know if it worked. ; )
