I bought this tray with a plan to do something crafty with it. But then I decided to use it by the kitchen sink to hold hand lotion and soap and dish detergent. Well, I quickly found out the dampness made a big rusty spot on the tray. By that time the tray was moved to the garage. It was time to figure out how to save a rusty metal tray with paint.
I used the palm sander to remove the rust and then hand-sanded in the areas where the sander couldn't get in.
I painted the tray several times to prevent the remaining rust from bleeding through since I didn't have any primer.
I used 00 steel wool to smooth it out. Ues a light touch in order not to distress it. I decided to use a spray of clear glaze but I think a poly would work also.
Now a metal memo board needs pretty magnets. I used the glass gem accents used for floral arrangments. Just take pretty scrap book paper and cut to size. Decoupage to the glass accent by brushing Mod Podge on the glass. Put on the cut-out paper, let dry. Brush on more Mod Podge to the back.
Once it is dry attach a small magnet. I used the kind that has sticky stuff on the back but to be on the safe side you can put on a dab of glue and then stick it on the back of the glass accent.
Now, this can probably be used as a tray but it really does make a great memo board. And it is a pretty way to stay organized.
