Do you mean sterling silver or stainless steel utensils?
If you are referring to stainless steel or "silverware" you can wash those in the dishwasher. But not real silver. Here is the Cascade site if you want more info:

Real silverware shouldn't be washed in the dishwasher.
I agree with Cynthia. Dishwasher soap is very corrosive and will eventually pit your silver
Don't wash silver in the dishwasher. Dishwashing liquid has scrubbing compounds in them. They will etch and pit the silver.
I agree with the above comments. Don't put real silver in the dish washer. I would use a real silver cleaner like Wright's Silver Paste. You can purchase it on Amazon for $3.95
Andy: hand wash for safety!
Hi Andy - This is the most effective and all-natural silver cleaning and polishing method that we use. It's also been featured by Hometalk. Hope this helps! Hugs, Holly

HI Andy,
Putting real silver in a dishwasher will damage it by etching, the d/w detergent for dishes/pots and pans is abrasive.
I use a silver cleaning product. Helps if you store the silverware in a box with the anti-tarnish protection cloth.
Andy....I usually use a silver cleaner..,can be purchased at most grocery stores or Walmart
No
I dip my silver in Tarn-x. Then after drying off, I store silver in those soft gray bags to reduce tarnishing.
FYI, as an aside, I’ve heard that Cascade is damaging and bad for your dishwasher.
