  • Buy a few bags of charcoal and place in dishes around your house. You need to wash all your clothes, no way around it. Clean out the closets, wash them. Place all smokey clothes in large plastic trash bags, ideally with charcoal. Wash items and only place back in closet when clean and smoke free. May take a bit of time to go through your entire wardrobe. Since the fire ccurred while you were out of town, your items should be insured under your landlords homeowners policy. Make a claim for any damages and they should be responsible for paying the bill to have your clothes cleaned. Whatever money you spend out of pocket to remediate your apartment, keep the receipts to show proof. If the landlord is unwilling to cooperate, get a good landlord / tenant attorney.

Have you tried plain ammonia? I used to wash my daughter's rank softball clothes and my husband's work clothes (worked in manufacturing and always came home with metal and fire smell). A little ammonia in the wash worked every time.

There's a product called Hot Shot Fogger Odor Neutralizer. Follow directions exactly and it'll work wonders.

Simple Green is available at most Walmarts or Menards. It comes in concentrate if you have a spray bottle and is cheaper that way. It both disinfects and deodorizes! It doesn't mask the odor, it removes it
