House had carpet glued down in bathroom. How do I remove the glue?

I have two places in the house that I need to get the glue off of the floors. One was the carpet in the bathroom. Glue is around the edges. The second is right inside the front door. We took the carpet up and found hardwood floors! So I took the tile up to find hardwood covered in glue. I want to know how to get the glue off of the two places.

Use a floor scraper - like this - you can get them at Home Depot, Lowes, etc.

I used a hair dryer in one hand, blowing heat on the glue, and a plastic putty knife in the other hand to slowly lift the glue as it softened. It takes a bit of patience but it works eventually.

I've used Goo Gone and a plastic putty knife. Goo Gone is amazing. It's available at hardware stores and Walmart.

I've used WD40. spray it on and let it sit for a while. It breaks down the adhesive. you will know if it has sat long enough because the plastic putty knife should lift it easily

Menards has a product made for this issue. I had to use it to remove 30 year old kitchen carpet. Worked great!!

Krud Kutter is excellent for removing glue, dried paint, etc. Can be purchased at Walmart.

If the glue is hard (epoxy like hard) it can be chipped off with a painter's tool and mallet. Just make sure you use the flat side down to keep from gouging the wood. If soft (Silicone adhesive soft), a solvent should work. Either way, you may have to refinish the floor afterwards, anyway. A power belt sander to smooth the ridges and an oil based spar urethane applied in a couple of coats should give you a long lasting good looking floor. Phil
  • All these suggestions will work. If you plan on refinishing the hardwood floors, the floors will need to be sanded. That should get up any teeny tiny bits left over from whatever method you choose. Good luck and have fun! Hardwood floors are great!

We were putting click flooring down, My husband put cornstarch on the floor and rubbed it with leather gloves. Took the sticky out and then we vacuumed it. Sounds crazy but it worked.

had hard glue underneath a table at work that I tore the laminate off, had the same problem, till I accidently spilled my coffee on it ,maybe 5 or ten min. later I wiped up the coffee an alas the hardened glue came right off, I even tried gasoline an that wouldn't cut it, so try coffee, maybe it will work for you.

We use a product called Goof Off. It comes in various size cans or a handy spray can. It even took off the misting of spray paint from the hood of my Equinox that got in the way of my husband spray painting IN THE WIND. Didn't hurt the car finish either and saved his life...LOL. it took bubblegum out of the carpet too. I swear by this stuff! You can get it at Lowe's, Home Depot or a hardware store like Ace.

Hand sanitizer..the alcohol in it loosens it right up! Did this on linoleum that had a rubber mat stuck to it. spread it over the spot, leave for 10 minutes..and rub it right off. Repeat if necessary.

Mineral spirits and lots of paper towels. I used this to get the old black glue off concrete floor that had parquet flooring on it. Works perfectly.

First thing to try is just plain water. I learned this the hard way trying to remove glued down indoor/outdoor carpet from the 70s. Then move to mineral spirits. It may not be the same glue in both places. Ours wasn't. Kitchen needed mineral spirits. BR needed water to dissolve the glue. Use lots of fans to exhaust the air out the window while working with mineral spirits. Otherwise you'll be on the worst drunk of your life!

Try WD 40. This stuff sometimes works wonders on sticky stuff. GOO GONE works too.

We removed an entire kitchen floor of carpet glue with Totally Awesome degreaser from Dollar Tree. It seemed to melt the glue to the point where it could be scraped off. We did about a 2 ft sq section at a time.
