Use heavy duty aluminum foil. Hate to name a brand, but I've used all types and Reynolds is the best because it's better quality. Cover the sink with the SHINY side up. I use pickling salt. Use warm water and dissolve the salt in the water. Boil water on the stove. My recipe is 2 cups salt to 1 gallon water. I then use silver polish to go over the piece because the polish forms a coating so the silver doesn't tarnish as quickly. Then once a month. I can go over quickly with the polish. Silver's beautiful, but it is work.

It is really better to clean silver with a silver polish like Wrights or Goddards. The above suggestions work but it is a messy job and you still really have to use the polish after wards. The boiling, salt, baking soda, aluminum foil work for very badly tarnished items, but it is not necessary for regular cleaning. I collect silver and have maybe almost 500 pieces of flatware.
