How can I remove mold from my bathroom ceiling?

One of my bathrooms seems to have a lot of black mold on the ceiling. I've tried popular cleansers that boast that they remove mold & mildew but they have not worked. Aside from ripping out the ceiling is there anything you suggest?

This is caused by insufficient or lack of ventilation. Try Bleach but be careful not to put too much on for fear of drips etc.

    A. Why do you have mold on the ceiling ? Is the roof leaking or the room not properly venting ?

    B. You have to address this or that mold will keep coming back to haunt you , no matter what .

    C. Once you have eliminated the source of moisture , you can dry out the ceiling with fans and a dehumidifier .

    D. Mold remediation products can be found at Lowe's or Home Depot . I'm pretty sure that you're beyond vinegar at this point and bleach just changes the color of it on porous surfaces . It doesn't kill it.

first you need to figure out why you have mold, then once corrected, you can clean the mold (I've always used the bleach method). If you don't correct the moisture problem, the mold will just keep reappearing. Repaint the ceiling after the mold is removed.

  • Have you tried straight vinegar yet? If the mold is that bad, you may just have to replace the ceiling, and maybe even some of the walls. Have you determined the reason for the mold? If you do not fix the source, it will grow back on your new ceiling and walls.

I think it's because my children take really long showers and there is not good ventilation. I haven't tried straight up vinegar yet. Do you suggest white vinegar?

Hello Lisa; I have had excellent results for killing mold, by using white vinegar.

I have also used clear rubbing alcohol, and it successfully killed the mold.

I hope that this helps you!!! Take Care!

Hydrogen Peroxide is the best for kill mold in porous areas such as a ceiling. You will need 3% Hydrogen Peroxide full strength. I would not use this or anything in a sray bottle because it is overhead. Use a sponge and thoroughly saturate the mold and around it. Let it sit for at least 10 minutes, then scrub the area to remove it - don't use a brush overhead - just some heavy elbow grease. Then wipe it down again. Then kilz your sealing. Use 2 coats to be sure - then paint.
