When I clean the blades on our ceiling fan, I use an old, clean pillow case. Like this:

For the blades, I use a microfiber dusting cloth to wipe all the dust off, then clean them with a clean rag and some Simple Green. I also lay a sheet down under the fan first so my floors and furniture don't get dirty. If I'm in a hurry, though, I slip a pillowcase over the blade, grasp the blade on both sides and pull toward me. Catches all the gunk without it falling all over everything.
I try to use the hose on my vacuum first, to get any significant clumps of dust. Then spray it with some furniture dusting spray and wipe it off with an old sock covering my hand.
