I asked if u knew any way to clean the outside of an iron skillet. The inside is fine but the outside has layers of build up. my grandma gave it to me.

When I was younger my grandmother and her daughters made Applebutter in the fall in a large iron pot hung over a fire. Everyone brought their cast-iron skillets and tossed them in the fire. When the cooking was done at the end of the day and the fire had died down, all the skillets were removed and all crust and crud had been burned off. Of course they had to re-season them and all were reborn in their original state. I have been wondering if I could do the same thing by placing my cast-iron skillets on the rack in my oven when I put it on self clean? Anyone tried this?

I put mine in a self cleaning oven when I cleaned the oven. It worked pretty good.

Leave it alone! Your inside is clean.....that is all that matters.

I would leave it alone. The build up shows it has been used and loved for some time.
