Even though we have an auger, most commonly we find that our drains need to be physically fished out. Either using an unbent hanger or plastic barbed tool from the dollar store to explore the drain obstruction.
Fishing out the blockage that in our experience seems to partially involve hair seems to most readily alleviate stoppage in our bathroom faucets and shower drains.
Get one of those plastic strips with barbs that are made to pull hair out of the drain. They are real cheap, Walmart, some dollar stores, home improvement stores all sell them, and they are really cheap and reusable for a long time. Get all the hair out that you can by sticking it down the drain numerous times. To clean the rest of the gunk, put about a quarter cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by at least a half cup of vinegar. Let it fizz and bubble for at least fifteen minutes. Follow with about a gallon of boiling water to rinse everything down the drain. Hopefully that will have your pipes clean as a whistle.
I didn’t want to take the sink stopper & drain apart to clear, so I went to my local hardware store and purchased a “sink plunger.” It is smaller & has a shorter handle than a regular sized plunger. I placed the sink plunger over the opened stopper / drain opening and began to push down on the plunger. After 6 or 7 pushes, I saw the backed up water slowly start to drain. I poured 2 qts of boiling hot water into the sink and kept pushing on the plunger (being careful not to splash hot water on myself). The clog released. I poured another 2 qts of hot water to further flush the drain. No more problems.
