use white vinegar
Wipe down with vinegar. Vinegar will kill the mold spores, bleach will not.

Improve the ventilation in the room, even a portable fan will help!
If spraying bleach doesn't work, then try Windex. I would get rid of the mold, even IF the varnish gets lacklustered. You can always re-apply varnish! Mold is bad for your health. An unvarnished wood is not bad for your health.
I use a mixture of water and vinegar. Just add a bit, maybe an eighth of a cup to a hand held garden/plant spray bottle. Vinegar is great for cleaning lots of things. If you hate the smell you can always make a water with lemon juice concentrate to spray add your last run through. Calms it down a lot.
Wash the area first with bleach water to help with the staining and removal of all the surface mold. Put vinegar on it and let it dry to give it time to kill the spores that are left on the wood after cleaning.

Oh dear, be super careful spraying bleach. It can ruin anything it touches and if you inhale it accidentally, your lungs will sustain damage. A safer alternative is hydrogen peroxide. It attacks the mold organically. In the chemical reaction that occurs, the extra oxygen (per- (2) oxygen to 2 hydrogen in each molecule) destroys the living mold cells. All you have left is dirty water (H2O).
That said, mold eats through what it's growing on, so you may miss spores deep in the wood and on your walls. Be vigilant & do this often, and try refinishing the wood, when its completely dry, to discourage future growth.
In a sprayer bottle add about 10 drops of Tea Tree Oil to the water, spray the area and wipe. The tea tree oil is a mold inhibitor.
