Use apple cider vinegar, it will take the rust right off, you may have to scrub a little bit, but let it sit for a couple of days.
WD 40

I have removed a whole lot of rust from tools by simply using a steel, wire wheel on a drill. There are several shapes and sizes of wire wheels. I have preferred corded drills over battery operated ones. Seem like they just have better zing on 110v. Also you can protect them for a long time by spraying them with a clear finish suitable for metal. I'm personally a Rustoleum fan. I would not recommend the 2X Rustoleum which can be used on plastic, stick with the original that was intended for metal. For continued regular use you will probably want a Matte finish. If you want to keep them for sentimental reasons or to display, you could also consider one of the other sheens as well. Good luck.
Soak in Coca Cola overnight minimum, longer if necessary. Scrub with wire brush and or steel wool. Oil cleaned tools with WD40 and wipe off excess.
CLR for rust is a good cleaner for tools. Spray on, let sit and then use steel wool to remove the rust and crud.
Prevent rust ... (an old school method from before the days of paint) apply a coating of linseed oil... allow to dry a few days before using. This also preserves an antique look. Just periodically reapply on edges that get worn.
You may wish to apply several coats.
And follow ALL precautions for using linseed oil... its application tools (cloth or paper towels ) can spontaneously combust.
soak rusty tools, fishing poles and rusty toilet stains with a can of coke.
