How do I keep the risers white on staircase?

I have a staircase that leads to my basement and the risers are constantly getting smudged and scuffed. How can I keep them white?

I think your best bet is to repaint any smudged ones with fresh paint. After it is thoroughly dry, coat the risers with non yellowing poly. Then you can wash the smudges off the poly and the paint remains white.
Use one of those white erasers
My concern would be that a painted surface can be very slick if it is not textured.... constantly repainting would cover any texture... making it a slipping hazard if wet or when wearing socks or some slippers...
I agree with the white erasers. Those things are magic :-)
