Hi Andrea! My grandma only cooked with cast iron. She used plain old brillo pads, although I use steel wool. Either one works, just more rinsing with the brillo pads. Once the rust is removed, rinse thoroughly, dry and warm your oven to 350. You want to bake the moisture right out of the metal so do this for about an hour. Then let it cool off in the oven. Once it's cool, season with vegetable oil or lard. When you clean it next time, don't wash it in soapy water, just hot water and a scrubby. Make sure it is completely dry. Gram always dried hers on top of her gas stove. I stick mine in on low heat (about 200 degrees for a half hour) in the oven and then let it cool there. If your food starts sticking to the pan, you need to season it. Gram made everything from bacon to cornbread in hers. She liked to season with bacon grease.
