    Are they removable?

Place the grates in a plastic garbage bag, add a quarter cup of ammonia (wear gloves) put it outside overnight. The fumes from the ammonia will break down the grease and grime. Remove from bag and wash them off using your regular dish detergent and hot water.

I would use a wire brush sold for cleaning a bar-b-q if they are really dirty.

We place ours in the dishwasher every now and then. They come out looking like new. If they are really encrusted, then the ammonia in a plastic bag also works well.

I took all my stovetop stuff to the appliance store to replace it. The guy at the store said, 'Don't spend the money! Do this instead.' He told me to buy Lestoil and soak the (iron tops and catch pans) in a solution of half Lestoil and half water overnight. Then wash like you would dishes, rinse and air dry. (Or run through the dishwasher). Lestoil is a specific for grease and grime. Only don't get any on your linoleum floor. It will eat through it! I had an old bottle under my sink eat right through itself and leak everywhere. I keep my current bottle sitting in a cut down milk jug.

My racks in my self-clean oven can be left in while cleaning. I put my grates and place them on the racks. Then turn the turn the oven on clean. My oven defaults to 3 hours, but will go down to one hour. So, I turn down to one hour and they always come out like new. Even the worst crude comes off. Hope this helps.
