The way I do it is to use a deep bisquit pan, lined with aluminum foil, shiny face up. I put all the silverware in the pan loosely, add a few drops of Dawn, and cover the silverware in very hot or boiling water. Leave in the pan for 2-3 hours. Rinse the silverware under running water. Polish with a clean soft cloth or towel. Best wishes ☺️
This is a method I've used and it does work. I prefer to boil a kettle of water, and do this in a dishpan: https://www.mom4real.com/clean-silver-remove-tarnish/
Make sure if it is good silver, that the knives are actually not plated. My mom's silver, which was very expensive had plated handles, they did that to reduce weight. Every time you use this method you remove a little of the silver on your silverware and you are usually left with a grey residue on the pieces that can be difficult to get off. Do not use this frequently. Also if the recipe calls for salt, do not use the salt, silver reacts to salt and will cause tarnishing that is extremely hard to remove. I went into a salt water hot tub once and forgot to take off my sterling necklace and it literally turned black and took months to get rid of.
I sell a lot of silver on Ebay. Jewelry, silverware, serving sets. Silver polish like Wrights and dips like Tarn X tend to remove some of the metal. The foil method doesn't work that great and still leaves a grey film that still needs to be removed AND it also removes some of the metal. I use white toothpaste (not gel)and a damp toothbrush. For large items I use a damp cloth. Also works on copper, brass, gold, porcelain, ceramics, sneakers, plastics, etc. For my sales I needed one product for cleaning everything.
