How to get rid of cat urine smell.

My daughter purchased a house with hardwood floors and when she went through it, she didn't smell anything. Now, she can't move in it because it smells strongly of cat urine and there are some stains on the hardwood floor that she hadn't seen when she looked at the house. How do you get rid of the smell without tearing the whole floor out?

You might be able to get away with re-sealing them. But I would sand them, re-stain and then seal them. Or she can use a heavy duty sealer like kilts and put carpet over the top of them. I understand your daughter I would be very sick if I lived in a house with cat urine. We had a neighbors cat come through our dog door and sprayed my living room. I was up in the middle of the night scrubbing and had to have a Commerical cleaner come in and clean all my furniture. I had a migrane for a week.

I have tried EVERYTHING - bi-carbonate of Soda, vinegar, biological detergent etc to no avail. I now use something called Rainbowclean a biological preparation from a firm called Aqua-Air Ltd in the UK (where I live). This works. All you need is a 5ml to 500ml of cold water mixture and spray it on, then scrub over it. This stuff is magic. I have five cats so I should know!! Annette D
  • I use Urine Off. You can get it on Amazon. Though you will need to sand, stain, and seal. The product breaks down the crystals found in cat urine. If it's in the baseboard from marking since that typically is vertical, you may have to replace, paint and put a bead of caulking. I have 3 cats and urine drives me nuts.

If it is in one section, and all else failed, you might want to have the boards and the padding or plastic replaced in that area.

Nature's Miracle is a great product, too.

That happened to us too. We hired an expert to refinish all the floors. It was worth it. No smell and beautiful floors. Most of the stains sanded out. What didn't just gave them character and no one knew.
