I fill mine with real hot water, put the cap on and soak the outside with hot soapy water.
Believe it or not, most of the time soaking your jar in hot soapy water does the trick. After soaking, and some label is still there I use a Brillo or S.O.S. pad. You need to be very gentle so you don't scratch the glass. For stubborn labels, Goo Gone really works. I'm told that WD40 works also.
"Oops" (at Sherwin Williams) works the best but lighter fluid also works.
I use vegetable oil. It doesn't matter what kind. I smear it onto the label and let it set. it might take a few times to do that until all of it comes off
Buy Goo Gone. Let it soak in, then it will easily scrape away.

you can use peanut butter, cooking oil, or WD 40. I run mine under hot water or soak them then use the oil.
