You Will Need:
Steps to Remove the Soot:
Mix one tablespoon of TSP with one gallon of water. Moisten a sponge or soft cloth with the solution and wipe it over the soot-stained area. If the stain remains, wipe the area with Murphy Oil Soap. Rinse with clean water.
What type of material is the 'rough design' on your ceiling made out of?
Is it presently painted or stained?
clean with warm blue dawn soapy water. It’s a slow job but once you get all smoke residue off, paint with Kilz.

I had no luck removing soot from a textured ceiling. I ended up sealing it with Kilz before repainting the ceiling. I hope you have better luck!
