How to remove rust from a cast iron skillet?
I have cast iron skillets that have been in the garage for years now. I have used vinegar and baking soda, as well as wire brushes, however there remains some rust in the skillet! Is sanding them the only alternative?

Scrub with steel wool and coarse salt. Steel wool is more abrasive than a wire brush. You can also cut a potato in half to scrub with the salt.
Once removed, rinse with warm water, and wipe out with a paper towel.
Rub shortening or oil in the pan, turn the oven to 350 degrees, put a large pan to catch drippings below, place pan upside down in the oven for an hour. Turn off the oven and remove when oven is completely cool.
