Our doggie door brings dirt into the house, how can we stop this?

Doggie door opens out to a large graveled yard, from our bedroom. Can this access get filtered somehow before our dogs come back into the house? It'a an air tunnel that allows too much tracking from outside.

I have a large piece of carpeting laid outside on top of cement pavers to keep dirt from being tracked through the dog door. A small area rug inside also catches dirt. If it's muddy, I close the dog door and when I let them in, towel their feet off immediately. And, yes, it's a never ending battle to keep the dirt out.

  • I have 6 dogs and 6 cats and it is part of having pets. Is your yard completely covered in gravel, grass or mulch? That will help cut down the amount of dust and dirt entering your home. As Sal suggested, place rugs or carpets at each end to lessen the amount of dirt entering your home.

A weather proof mat on the outside, such as the Waterhog indoor/outdoor doormat. Then also place one on the inside which doesn't have to be weatherproof. Read the reviews and find one that had 4-5 stars for catching dirt.
